Celestron Nexstar 130 SLT Newtonian Telescope With Free Moon Filter
With a fully computerized hand control giving you the ability to automatically slew to any of its 4,000 objects
Read an in-depth review of the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT by Ian Morison, Jodrell Bank Observatory
And the 130 SLT, like the other models in the SLT Series, comes with a fully computerized hand control. The computerized hand control gives you the ability to automatically slew to any of its 4,000+ objects, including over 600 galaxies, 300 clusters and dozens of beautiful binary stars. With its pre-assembled, adjustable steel tripod, the NexStar 114 SLT can be up and ready to use in a matter of minutes. Our new SkyAlign alignment technology and the included StarPointer Finderscope with a red LED makes aligning a breeze.
View the details of the lunar surface, the rings of Saturn, the polar ice caps on Mars, the cloud belts on Jupiter or a number of the Messier objects such as the globular cluster in Hercules (M13), or the Great Nebula in Orion (M42). Begin to explore some of the fainter Messier objects using the additional light-gathering capabilities of the 130 SLT’s 5" primary mirror.
Because of the Newtonian design, the mirror gives fully color-corrected views that are best suited for astronomical use.

The SLT 130 is perhaps the value for money SLT. It has the largest aperture of the four models but is one of the least expensive. The telescope is a 130mm Newtonian so this is easily enough aperture to be able to see all 110 Messier objects, the rings of Saturn, the main cloud belts on Jupiter, countless features on the moon, and a great many of the best double stars. Photography is possible with the 130 SLT. With prime focus photography, there is enough back-focus to accommodate a dSLR. A-focal photography is also possible by using a support adapter such as the Baader Microstage. The SLT mount cannot be tipped into an equatorial position, so long exposure photography is not possible. Prime focus or a-focal photography is thus limited to very short exposures such as the moon and the brightest planets. Video imaging of the moon and planets is possible.
Requirements. You will need a 12v DC Powertank or a 230v AC to 12v DC adapter. The SLT mounts can accept AA batteries but they may not last longer than one nights observing.
Budget for a power supply, a short focal length eyepiece for the moon and planets (e.g. 5mm), or perhaps the Omni 2X Barlow lens instead of another eyepiece. Budget also for a Baader single polarizer for the moon and a weak light pollution filter such as the Baader 1.25” Neodymium.
