Opticron's DBA Oasis S-Coat Mg binoculars are examples of modern high performance roof prism binoculars, with all the advantages of the latest coating technologies, but at less than half of the price of the expensive European brands. It is an ideal birding binocular due to fast focusing (infinity down to 2.2m in less than 1.5 revolutions of the focus wheel). This also means it is ideal for following fast moving flying insects such as butterflies and dragonflies, that can rapidly change distance from the observer on a constant basis. Images are very bright and sharp even in low light. On our test reserve in North Yorkshire, the DBAs performed extremely well for prolonged viewing from a hide as well as rapid "up to the eyes" use whilst walking around. They are exactly what is required from a birding binocular, i.e. a pair that can hang around the neck and be brought quickly up to the eyes when a bird is spotted, without having to constantly re-adjust some aspect of the binocular before enjoying the view. The compactness and lightweight magnesium construction of the design easily allows for single handed use, an issue that most birders are used to when carrying a scope and tripod in one hand or over the shoulder, leaving only one hand free to use the binocular. We found the same was true for Opticron's Verano models too. Premium performance without the OMG price.
The rubber armouring on these DBAs is ribbed, as is the wide focus wheel. This means that they are easily gripped and focused with gloved hands in the winter. Opticron's own 2.5X UTA (Universal Tele-Adapter) can be used with this binocular on one eyepiece. Tripod mount the binocular using the tripod adapter socket when using the UTA. 20X or 25X magnification is too high to see sharp detail unless the image is still.
