Eyepieces are very important in your optical train. An eyepiece that is easy to look through and gives great views really makes a difference to your observing session, and contributes towards the overall enjoyment of looking through a telescope at the Moon, planets as well as deep sky objects.
Baader Planetarium have an excellent reputation when it comes to high quality telescope accessories, including eyepieces, and these relative newcomers in their eyepiece line up has been very well received by amateur astronomers of different abilities and experience. They have also been very well reviewed in publications such as the Sky at Night magazine Morpheus First Light Review.
- Available in the following focal lengths: 4.5mm (highest magnification), 6.5mm, 9mm, 12.5mm, 14mm and 17.5mm (lowest magnification)
- The Morpheus eyepiece range have been designed from the ground up - optically and mechanically. The overall outer design has been carefully thought through and the optics and internal structures have been fully ray-traced for best optical performance.
- They are very sharp and have a low distortion, flat 76° wide-field apparent field of view (AFOV). Eyepieces used for Lunar and planetary viewing generally have 50-60° AFOV, with 82° AFOV for deep sky observation. The Morpheus' 76° AFOV fits nicely "in-between" so they are ideal, for both planetary and deep sky use.
- They have a very comfortable ~20mm of eye relief. This makes them great to use for those of us who wear glasses, and also when used for binoviewing. Combined with their 76° AFOV these Morpheus eyepieces really give immersive views - its like sticking your head out of spacecraft port-hole window to give you that "space-walk like feeling".
- The shape, weight and overall size (55mm in diameter) of each of the eyepieces have been specifically designed for use with a binovewer. No other eyepiece has been thought out with such use, and in mind, from the start.
- Baader's Phantom Group Coatings was originally applied to their Hyperion eyepieces. It has now been further enhanced and applied to the Morpheus range for improved light transmission and contrast leading to a brighter and detailed image.
- They eyepieces feature a 1.25" and 2" dual nosepiece so they can be used in a range of diagonals and focusers. The 1.25" nosepiece has internal threads for (1.25") filters to be attached. The 2"/1.25" barrels feature numerous horizontal grooves - which Baader call Slip-Protect Safety Kerfs - for better security against eyepiece slippage and jamming.
- The whole of the eyepiece body is sealed against environmental elements to protect the internal lenses from dust and moisture. The eyepieces must not be opened!
- Underneath the fitted (but removable) metal-rubber eyecup lie's an M43 thread (just like what is found on Baader's Hyperion eyepieces). The inclusion of this thread makes them "camera ready" as they allow you to easily attach a DSLR/mirrorless, video or Solar System/planetary imaging camera to the eyepiece so you can do Lunar, planetary and Solar (with suitable safety film or equipment) eyepiece/afocal projection photography.

- Each eyepiece features a green coloured "glow-in-the-dark label" that not only tells you each is a "Baader Morpheus 76° eyepiece", but also helps you see what focal length you are about to choose or are holding in your hand.

Each individual eyepiece comes in a very sturdy, and quite stylish, foam-lined hinged-lid storage box to keep your precious optic safe. Inside the box you will find, of course, the eyepiece, as well as some useful accessories...and something that may leave you scratching your head....

- Nosepiece and eyecup dust caps are of course included as standard to keep the lenses clean.
- In addition to the fitted, but removable, M43 rubber metal eyecup, there is a winged rubber eyeguard. This eyecup can help stray light out and also can be useful if you are using the eyepiece with another
- The M43 extension ring, which has a height of 7.5mm, allows the eyecup to be raised up and away from the eyepiece for a more comfortable viewing experience if needed. Secondly it can help keep a smartphone or compact camera over the lens and at a safe distance from the eyepiece glass to avoid damaging/scratching the lens. Multiple adaptors can be stacked to obtain the perfect distance for eyepiece projection.
- A well made durable Cordura eyepiece holster case will keep your eyepiece safe during storage or transport. It features a Velcro front fastener and a Velcro-and-press-stud loop strap on the rear to let you attach the holster on your belt or to a tripod for easy eyepiece access.You will find a small stainless steel clip with what appears to be U-shaped holes on it. What on earth is this for? Is it the remnants of manufacturing? Something from another product included by accident? No! Its actually a very useful and very well thought out accessory that, to our knowledge, has not been included with any other current eyepieces. The clip can be attached to the eyepiece holster's front cover flap. The six "U" shaped holes represent the six Morpheus eyepieces. The little "finger" in the middle of the U-shaped hole can be left as is (flat) or can be bent upwards. This can help identify, by touch and feel ,what eyepiece is in the holster when in the dark. How?? For example you could have one finger bent upwards for your 4.5mm eyepiece (see below), two bent upwards for the 6.5mm eyepiece...up to...all of them upwards for the 17.5mm eyepiece. Simple! Ingenious! Typical of Baader's thinking to help the astronomer even more!!
